Game Changing Role of Social Media

Have you ever felt like you were in a scene from a spy movie with a gun placed to your temple and forced to do something against your will?  In truth, neither have I but when it comes to how social media propelled the recent Super Bowl season into my consciousness, it’s exactly how I felt. Thanks to social media platforms I was reminded time and again that this was the year of pigskins flying and advertisers’ wet dreams. As a guy, I suppose I should have my manly-man license revoked for not being excited by the game.  If push came to shove, though, I suppose I could impress my friends by making a mini-stadium with nothing but cold cuts and cheese slices.

Social media has transformed the way we allow events to impact our lives. You become an unwilling participant simply based on the buzz that social media generates. And it works. How else can you explain the fact that, although I didn’t watch a minute of the game, even before it was over I was made aware that Bruno Mars knocked it out the park with his half-time performance? And even though I do not know much about the music of Mr. Mars, thanks to YouTube I was made aware as I watched him shimmy across the stage in his sparkling gold jacket. And if the topic of the halftime game came up at a dinner party, I won’t be the lone man out.
